“Today We Are All Hokies”

"Today We are all Hokies" is an editorial cartoon, drawn the morning of April 16, 2007 in response to the breaking news of the Virginia Tech massacre. The cartoon appeared in Virginia newspapers and quickly went viral on social media, ultimately appearing on CNN and other international news outlets. John Seigenthaler, founding editorial director of USA Today and founder of the First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University, nominated this cartoon for a 2008 Pulitzer Prize. Writing to the Pulitzer board, Seigenthaler stated, "The moment I saw Ben Lansing's cartoon, it touched me. It spoke to me and for me in ways no news story or telecast had done." The sketches for this cartoon were added to the archives of the Newseum in Washington D.C.
